Peas didn't do well this year. Less than half of the seeds sprouted. I have no idea why. I decided that they had to go.
On Friday May 20, 2011 Bronco and I got the tiller out (I'm mad that I didn't get a picture of that) and destroyed the peas. This pic is post tiller.
I decided to plant corn where the peas were. Three years ago I planted corn and the stalks grew very tall, however, the ears never fully matured. Hopefully this year will be different. I planted seven rows; they say that corn needs to pollinate sow the more plants the better.
Planted more onions. These ones are on the south side of the house. There are too many onion sets in each row for them to grow to maturity, however, all I intend to do is harvest the stems as Green Onions...great in tacos, quesadillas, etc..
Lowe's had a great deal on Marigolds...six plants for $0.99. I bought 36 plants and planted them in the backyard, around the two trees in the front yard and also in the front flower bed with the Day Lillies. In a few weeks these Marigolds will be HUGE!
Many years ago, a friend of mine had cut a small branch off of an Aspen Tree and put it in a two-liter bottle. It began to grow roots. At least that's what I remember. Anyways, if it works I'll plant one more Aspen in the back-yard.
Planted two strawberry plants today. I tried strawberry plants before but they weren't successfull. They little tag thingy suggests regular feritlizing, which I had not done before. I will this year and hopefully it will work.

We've had soooo much rain lately. The rain; combined with hail that we had on Thursday May 19 did a number on some of my plants. The spinach, brocolli, and tomatoes got beat up prettty good. I don't think the hail damage was too much though, I expect them to still provied lots of mature produce.
Here's an overall shot of the garden...in a month or so we should have corn stalks about 12" tall in the front of this picture.
Today I spent about six hours working in the lawn and garden. I planted corn, strawberris, and onions. I pulled weeds, laid down new sod, cut out old sod, planted marigolds, mowed and trimmed the lawn. I loved every minute of it! After all that, I just wanted to hang out in the back yard. It was a perfect 65 degrees and Sunny. The kids and I kicked the soccer ball around for a little while before their bath time.
Most people hate yard work...I love it! I'll admit that when it's 90 degrees in July and August that it's not as fun, but for the most part, doing yard work on Saturdays is an enjoyable hobby, not a tedious chore. I look forward to it all week long. It's as much fun as going fishing...ok, maybe not that fun.
